2020 was a dry, hot year with multiple heat spikes in the summer. Pinot Noir from Peake Ranch held up beautifully. Two complementary clones of Pinot were selected: clone 667, which provides great structure, dark fruits and richness, and clone 115 gives bright red fruits, spice, and high-toned floral aromatics. After hand picking at night, the fruit was destemmed with whole clusters added in layers for complexity. Cold soaking in open top bins, provided slow extraction before fermentation began naturally. Gentle punch downs allowed the tannin profile to build while cooling the warm, fermenting cap. Pressed shortly after dryness and moved to barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. Bottled after 18 months in barrel.
TASTING NOTES
With a deep brick red hue, this Pinot Noir delivers spicy raspberry, cranberry, and rhubarb. A blend of fruit and savory character adds complexity with dusty clay, smoked black tea and Asian spices. Earthy tones of sage and wet stone add to its complexity. Balanced acidity and supple tannins keep the flavors fresh on the palate, leading to a long, clean finish.
WINE ENTHUSIAST
91pts | Dark cherry, cola and muddled earth aromas show on the nose of this appellation cuvée. The palate pairs dusty earth tones with a crisp cranberry core. —M.K.
