From Block L at the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Maria Valley, this old vine Chardonnay was planted in 1973 on its own roots. These deep rooted, mature vines growing in gravelly, clay loam soil, slowly ripen their fruit, retaining high natural acidity and tend towards the savory, mineral side of the flavor spectrum.
After hand picking at night, the fruit was gently pressed as whole clusters, the juice was settled overnight, then transferred to barrels for fermentation. The slow conversion of grape sugars gives complexity and increased mouthfeel. A steady primary and secondary ferment were encouraged by occasional stirring of the yeast lees. Like an “old world” Chardonnay from a historic vineyard, this wine developed slowly in the barrel, and will shine with additional time in the bottle.
TASTING NOTES
With a golden straw hue, this Chardonnay emits complex aromas of green apple, quince, and grilled lemon, with marzipan notes and a hint of flinty minerality. The palate delivers a mix of apple, citrus, stone fruits, and roasted almonds. The creaminess is nicely balanced by crisp acidity, keeping it lively on its lengthy finish.
